The Friday Luncheon Discussion Club Founded in 1920 and still going strong

Welcome to the home page of
The Friday Luncheon Discussion Club !

.
Founded in 1920, The Friday Luncheon and Discussion Club, (hereinafter the FLDC) meets at lunch time at the YMCA of the National Capital Region, 180 Argyle Ave, Ottawa (hereinafter the Y) every Friday between early October and early May (holidays excepted) to hear talks on a very wide range of subjects.  The cost to members is payment for a soup and sandwich lunch, and parking in the Y garage, from which the small profit is FLDC’s only source of funds.

The purpose of the FLDC is clear from its core values:

  • FLDC exists for the social and intellectual benefits of its members, free from commercial interests.

  • FLDC cherishes the rich diversity of humanity, and welcomes all who are interested in respectful, stimulating and informal discussions on a wide range of topics.

  • FLDC assures presenters that they may speak freely on their subject, that discussions are expected to be frank and candid, and that participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor of any other participant, may be revealed.

A typical meeting starts with up to an hour of socializing over lunch.  The speaker’s talk 30-45 minute presentation is then opened for up to 45 minutes of discussion before the speaker is thanked.

FLDC’s members are mostly retired or semi-retired from academe, medicine, business, teachers, the civil and other public services including the military and the police.  Potential speakers are suggested by members;  the talks cover a very wide range of areas.

FLDC thanks the Royal Canadian Mint, from whom we purchase the coins that we give as a token of thanks to our speakers.

We invite you to explore the following pages, which include a list of speakers for the current season, an outline of how to apply for membership, and a brief history of our club.
